Walk into most wellness clinics today and you’ll see the same pitch: more equipment, more modalities, more options. Cryochambers, cold plunges, hyperbaric oxygen chambers, saunas – the assumption is that a bigger menu makes a stronger offering.
None of these things drive recovery on their own. They’re tools – interventions that influence physiology, not primary drivers of it. Their value depends entirely on how, when, and why they’re used. And that judgment call is the job of a skilled practitioner, not a device.
Effective recovery starts with the individual – their physiology, demands and desired outcome – not with the equipment in the room. A Cryochamber doesn’t create results; the practitioner does, through knowledge, guidance and a wider strategy built around the person in front of them.
Where the Industry Is Going Wrong
Too many therapies are sold without the training needed to actually manage a client’s recovery. Instead of developing practitioners who can progress someone toward a real outcome, the industry is producing device operators – people running equipment on guesswork, selling sessions on the line “consistency achieves results.”
Consistency in what, exactly? Without a strategy behind it, a passive intervention doesn’t build demand for skilled care – it devalues it. The client stops paying for expertise and starts paying for access to a machine. That’s not recovery. That’s the difference between genuinely progressing a client and offering short-term symptom relief.
The Real Opportunity
This isn’t anti-technology. Cold exposure, heat therapy and recovery tech all have a place – as supportive modalities layered around real skill and experience. Used well, they strengthen outcomes. Used as the whole offering, they cheapen the industry and value per session.
The practitioners shaping the future of this space won’t be the ones with the most equipment. They’ll be the ones who are well trained and experienced enough to build a strategy first, and use the right tools to support it.
A Dream Worth Sharing
A post I saw recently summed this up well: after 20+ years interviewing physio applicants, the most common answer to “why physio?” is “I like sports and the human body.”
The dream is more applicants saying:
“I want to reduce the burden that manageable conditions place on society and improve people’s lives.”
Recently, one finally did.
That’s exactly why our education exists, and why we care so much about raising practitioner standards. Education is the most powerful tool we have to change an industry and it starts with training the practitioner, not stocking the clinic.
The Bottom Line
We need more wellness professionals trained to actually manage recovery – not just operate the machines around it.
