Over the past few weeks, we’ve been talking to clinic owners and reading through forum comments and discussions to understand how practitioners across the wellness and recovery industry really feel about Cryotherapy.
What we found wasn’t what we expected.
A significant number of practitioners have mentioned that they’ve either stopped offering certain services, such as pain management sessions, or stopped Cryotherapy altogether. It wasn’t the reasons behind that decision that surprised us most, it was what those reasons revealed about how little of the industry actually understands the therapy itself.
What Practitioners Are Saying
A few comments stood out:
- “Cryo is not effective long term.”
- “Cryotherapy and the RICE philosophy has become very outdated, not many physical therapists don’t recommend cold therapy anymore.”
- “The only way it’s worked in our wellness business is hiring an ad agency to run paid ads with a ‘double chin rescue’ or ‘cryoslimming’ offer, then try to sell packages of 5, 10 or 15 visits.”
- “I no longer focus on pain, I couldn’t see profit in it.”
Read together, these comments tell a clear story. Practitioners aren’t walking away from Cryotherapy because the therapy doesn’t work. They’re walking away because nobody ever taught them how it actually works, so it was never positioned, prescribed or delivered in a way that could succeed.
The Misunderstanding At The Root Of It
Cryotherapy didn’t originate as a wellness gimmick or passive modality. It developed as a clinical adjunct for autoimmune and chronic conditions. That single fact says a great deal about how fundamentally different it is from traditional icing.
Yet across the industry, we still see Cryotherapy and basic icing pitched against each other, or worse, treated as interchangeable. That comparison only makes sense if you don’t understand:
- The actual theory and physiological effects of Cryostimulation.
- The physiology of acute inflammation and thermoregulation.
Deep tissue cooling is not the goal for most injury management, arguably with the brief exception of the earliest stage of acute trauma. Understanding injury and adaptation is fundamental to understanding every form of cold and heat therapy, and where each genuinely fits in a client’s recovery.
Without that foundation, it’s no surprise practitioners default to slimming sessions and monthly discount offers to make Cryotherapy profitable. They were never given the clinical knowledge to make it work for genuine recovery and pain management, so they reached for whatever sold better instead.
This Needs To Change
For the industry to grow, for practitioners to build sustainable success, and for clients to leave every session knowing the therapy worked, rather than wondering if it did anything at all, this gap in understanding needs to close.
That’s exactly why we developed the Thermal Recovery Specialist qualification.
Become educated to true specialist level
Not device training, not a weekend certificate. Genuine clinical education underpinned by over 300 referenced research papers.
Built on Cryostimulation’s real medical origins
Commercialisation has left industry knowledge basic, confused and misinformed. We teach Cryostimulation from its original clinical foundations.
Cold and heat therapy, covered and compared
Managing injury, inflammation, recovery and wellness properly requires a deep understanding of every thermal modality, so you can achieve the consistent results that come when it’s implemented correctly. This is the only qualification that teaches them all in depth.
The commercial skills to turn expertise into revenue
Learn to prescribe, package and structure sessions that drive outcomes, retention and referrals.
This isn’t just a certificate, it’s a mark of genuine expertise in recovery through thermal therapy. If you’re serious about delivering clinical recovery therapies to the standard they require, this is the essential education that stands behind it.
