UNDERSTANDING CRYOTHERAPY & FORMS OF COOLING

Understanding Cryotherapy

‘Cryotherapy’ is an umbrella term covering a range of cold-based interventions, but treating them as a single entity is a common source of confusion. Each modality differs significantly in how it is applied, what it does physiologically and what it is clinically designed to achieve.

For clarity in both research and practice, Cryotherapy is best understood across three distinct categories: Cooling, Cryosurgery and Cryostimulation (Neurocryostimulation).

Forms Of Cryotherapy

Cooling (Icing)

Direct application of ice / cold to lower tissue temperature. Used for short-term pain relief and swelling management, not to accelerate healing.

Cryosurgery

Medical use of extreme cold (e.g. liquid nitrogen) to destroy diseased tissue (e.g. wart removal, tumour ablation).

Cryostimulation (Neurocryostimulation)

Brief whole-body or regional cold exposure (e.g. Cryochambers) to trigger systemic responses: pain reduction, inflammation modulation, improved circulation and recovery.

Forms of Cooling

Method Best For Avoid
Icing Acute injury, post-surgical recovery Chronic injury, poor circulation, neuropathy
Cold Compression Acute injury, post-surgical recovery Chronic injury, poor circulation, neuropathy
Cold Water Immersion (15 – 20°C+ / 59°F-68°F+) Perceived recovery, mild DOMS Acute injury, cardiovascular conditions
Cold Air Superficial pain, mobility Deep tissue injury
Cryolipolysis Fat reduction (cosmetic) Severe obesity, sagging skin

KEY POINT

  • Cryotherapy is not a single treatment – it’s an umbrella term covering three distinct modalities (Cooling, Cryosurgery, Cryostimulation), each with a different mechanism and clinical purpose.
  • Within Cooling alone, there are multiple delivery methods (icing, compression, immersion, air, cryolipolysis), each suited to different goals and contraindications.
  • Selecting the wrong modality – or the wrong form of cooling – for the situation limits results or risks harm; matching the method to the goal is essential.
